‘Panto’N'Roll’: Rock’s Most Colorful Songs Illustrated With Pantone Swatches

“You know you enthrall me and yet you don’t call me / It’s making me blue, Pantone 292,” sing The Magnetic Fields on “Reno Dakota.” Of course, the relationship between music and Pantone’s increasingly fetishized pigments isn’t usually that literal. But Paris-based creative studio Chic & Artistic has united the two worlds once again, in a series called Panto’N'Roll, which uses Pantone swatches to represent classic songs like “Purple Rain” and “Yellow Submarine.” Click through to see the designs, which we discovered via It’s Nice That, and visit Chic & Artistic‘s website to learn more about their work.

Ubabub Australia now available at Bobby Berk Home

When parents Natasha and Daniel Dumais
had trouble finding modern nursery furniture to suit their modern
taste, they decided to create their own.

And so… ubabub was born.

Ubabub (pronounced über-bub) is a line of Australian designed modern nursery furniture. Initially only available throughout Australia, this high-end brand has now come to the US, via a new partnership with The MDB Family. MDB will be adding ubabub to their list of distinguished brands. Call our store locations for a list of Ubabub items on display
Über stylish and practical, ubabub offers a line of ultra-safe, durable and ecologically friendly cribs and furniture. With a distinctly modern aesthetic, the carefully designed and constructed pieces not only add a streamlined modern edge to the nursery, but also bring extra comfort and freedom to parents and babies.
A bit about our family life That’s us in the photo above with our three adorable girls (though we are little biased!) Bianca, Sabine and Uma. Our life, probably like yours, is full of love, laughs and LOADS of chaos. Mind you, we wouldn’t have it any other way. In between all of this, we’re with our ‘other’ baby ubabub, busy designing thoughtful products to inspire you. Do enjoy!
All our products strictly adhere to American safety standards to provide parents with peace-of-mind that they have invested in a nursery piece that offers optimum safety, practicality and freedom for their baby.
Cots available with our strong and durable clear acrylic panels keep little limbs inside their cot whilst providing parents and bubs with greater visibility and security.
All ubabub cots and beds are low height and contain no side mechanism, thus reducing potential hazards.
  • Each piece meets industry standards for child safety.
  • Highest quality construction.
  • Non-toxic timber finishes.
  • Proven to withstand the rigours of child’s play.

Cielo’s classic shape integrates into any environment, regardless of style, and it can be suspended individually or in a series to provide warm and balanced illumination. The larger the grouping, the bolder the display. Cielo offers a full dimming range and is composed of energy efficient LEDs rated for up to 50K hours

Celebrity Designer, Bobby Berk returns to his roots during “The South’s Next Wave: Design Challenge”

Bobby’s come a long way from his humble beginnings in the South. He arrived to NYC less than 10 years ago with barely a dollar to his name, but a whole lot of drive, talent and ambition to make up for it. Bobby has quickly become the new “It Guy” in modern furniture and design. These days, celebrities such as Susan Sarandon, Brooke Shields, Sam Worthington Drew Barrymore, and Tori Amos have graced the doors of his Bobby Berk Home stores located throughout the US. Even Will and Jada Smith sleep between Bobby Berk Home sheets. In 2009, his stores made the list of gay icon Rupaul’s Top Favorite Things, but Bobby says “I’m still waiting on that call from Oprah.” Bobby has made multiple guest appearances on HGTV, Bravo, TLC, and NBC lending his design talents on residential home projects to designing the sets of hit shows. His growing empire keeps him traveling around the world looking for future BBH locations, dropping in on his factories to check on new product designs, and working on his many design projects from Hong Kong to Miami. When invited by David Goodrowe and Tim Hobby to be a part of [The South’s Next Wave: Design Challenge at The Museum of Modern Art & Design in Atlanta, GA, he was delighted to return home to the deep south.
The South’s Next Wave: Design Challenge, is part exhibition, part competition. The exhibition paired designers of interior spaces with Atlanta-based object designers, who together created imaginative vignettes throughout the museum. Bobby paired with Joe Manus who brought his amazing Mood Rocking Bed as a starting point of inspiration for Bobby. “The moment I saw Joe’s bed, it took me back to my childhood growing up in the south.”, Bobby said. “My favorite thing to do in the summer was to sleep out in the forest on the farm I grew up on. I used to beg my mom to let me put a real bed out in forest so I could lie there and listen to the sounds of the forest while still having all the comforts of home. My design for this competition will take you to that forest in the deep south, complete with the low hanging trees, stars in the sky, and crackling campfire slowing burning out as you fall asleep.”

On the opening night, Bobby’s unique design quickly became a fan favorite of Museum board members, local celebrities, and the 100’s of guest that came to see the exhibit. The South’s Next Wave: Design Challenge runs from November 11th - March 31th, 2012 at The Museum of Modern Art & Design in Atlanta.

For more information about the exhibit please visit http://www.museumofdesign.org/2012/03/call-for-submissions/. You can also find more information about Bobby and his stores at http://www.bobbyberkhome.com.

Spotlight on Design - Natural Curiosities

Natural Curiosities by Christopher Wilcox
As I reflect on my second life, my journey in Los Angeles, I often consider the bold shifts and growth an individual can undergo upon moving to a new land; a country that is not one’s birthplace.
The change is so extreme; it is almost as if a new life has been gifted. The reason for starting with that reference is its relevance to my renewed commitment to live life as creatively as my heart commands, to listen to my instinct and to walk a fresh path every day. When I was eight I told my parents I would not live out my life in England, but that I would call someplace else home and that I would have a big family; fortunately, that is my today.
My creative journey, and I believe everyone’s, began when I found the earth beneath my feet resonated with my spirit. To be where you want to be, to connect with the earth and the culture of a land is paramount. Once that is established one can start entertaining ideas and dreams that seem absurd and make them a reality.
I rely on creative connectors every day, including the land I call home, my family, energetic food, music, the act of collecting inspiring treasures and my colleagues. I approach each day with compassion and an inclination for the absurd.
Born from a deep love of the arts, and what art is capable of representing in culture and society life, Natural Curiosities is one of my proudest achievements. I consider it an accomplishment made possible by the love and loyalty of incredibly creative clients, both old and new, who believe in our journey and have become loyal supporters to the belief that art is not a decorative accessory, but an essential part of design and, in our case, work full of soul made by people who love what they do. I would also like to deeply thank all the members of The Octo-Caravan both past and present, for without you the wheels would never turn.
Looking forward,
Christopher

Our Studio
Located on Sunset Blvd, our studio is tucked into the core of Echo Park’s historic Jensen Recreation Center, a current cultural monument originally erected in 1924.
Once a bowling alley, the space has evolved to embrace our artistic pursuits. Daily we work amongst the remnants of the past, continually drawing from our environment’s rich history.
Our favorite relic of the studio’s past life is 50 ft long mural which depicts an imaginary Egyptian landscape; when the building was first constructed, much of the décor was designed in celebration of the discovery of King Tut’s tomb by Howard Carter in 1922.
For nearly a century the Jensen Rec Center has housed various Los Angeles artists, musician and filmmakers; we feel honored to create daily in a home with so much character.

The Natural Curiosities Team
We are an evolving body of people who share the ultimate pursuit: to create works of art. Our collective objective is to work in an environment where creativity remains supreme. Both polished and raw, we share a love of beauty in design. Daily we are in pursuit of the bespoke and collectable.
We honor Nature each day and ceaselessly explore its mystery.
We are unpredictable, vibrant, and strong. We strive to recognize and embrace change as we uphold the belief that Art is the backbone of Culture.

Spa Week’s Design and Organizational Expert Bobby Berk is a Texas native who started his career at design powerhouses Restoration Hardware and Portico Bed & Bath, and now has his own stores in New York, Miami and Atlanta, with LA coming soon. He is known for his mid-century style and playful use of acrylic, stainless steel, and wood. Bobby says: “A clean and organized home can do wonders for your overall health and well-being.” If you haven’t yet, join Bobby’s Spring Cleaning Challenge (starting tomorrow!) – he dares you to remove one item from your home a day for 10 days straight. “You will feel empowered by freeing yourself of bulky design elements like too-big vases and lamps or cluttered and under-used storage bins that are just taking up space.” Bobby insists. “Liberate yourself from bad design and clutter and turn your home into a sanctuary of inviting relaxation that you can be proud of and will look forward to coming home to.” And although “there are no rules…” Bobby strongly encourages the following:

Clean it up! Bobby Berk’s Spring Cleaning Challenge

This is not my room, but it very well could be. I definitely have an “organized chaos” approach when it comes to keeping things neat and tidy. Plus, I save almost everything. Coming from a big family, there was hardly room for enough beds, let alone enough shelves or organizers. Stuff was always everywhere. But the biggest challenge I had growing up wasn’t the clutter, it was holding on to my stuff. My siblings were ways “borrowing” my things. So, I learned how to protect my “important stuff.” Now, as an adult, I find myself holding on to everything. Not in a creepy hoarder-type of way, but I know I definitely hold on to old clothes, broken jewelry and mismatching furniture for too long. Because, hey, I bought it, it’s mine and you never know when you’ll need it, right?
But, every now and then (especially if my room starts to look like the above), I begin to get the anxious feeling that my room is going to swallow me whole; that there’s just too much stuff, too many colors, too much over-stimulation. I want to just get rid of it all. However, sometimes it’s just really overwhelming to try and muster up the motivation to purge my room of unnecessary things… I wish I had someone who could help me methodically and systematically let go of my organized chaos and help me embrace clean, sophisticated design for optimal organization and peace of mind…
… That’s where our design darlingBobby Berk, comes in. If you’re like me and you’re in a tug-o-war with all the stuff in your home that you’ve acquired over the years then you’re in luck! Bobby is here to challenge you to get your home and your life in tip top shape. Never fear, Bobby is here!

Are you ready for CHALLENGE #12?

Here’s what to do:

De-clutter and simplify your life by removing one item from your home every day for 10 days. From seldom-used kitchen appliances to that dress you will never wear again that’s still hanging in your closet, Bobby challenges you to rid your home of items that are over-stimulating and over-complicating your living experience. (Extra bonus points: de-clutter your home and help others by donating your items to a local charity! Double Extra Points: Take a picture of each item and share it on The Spring Cleaning Challenge event wall on Spa Week’s Facebook Page.)

Why:

Bobby says a clean and organized home can do wonders for your overall health and well-being. You will feel empowered by freeing yourself of bulky design elements like too-big vases and lamps or cluttered and under-used storage bins that are just taking up space. Liberate yourself from bad design and clutter and turn your home into a sanctuary of inviting relaxation that you can be proud of and will look forward to coming home to.

When:

Friday, May 4 to Sunday, May 13
