Bobby Berk Gives Tiffani Thiessen’s Home A Holiday Makeover

Bobby Berk is known for his fresh, mid-century-inspired interior design. He brought that signature urban minimalist  style to the latest episode of the HGTV special Celebrity Holiday Homes, on which he gave 90’s teen star Tiffani Thiessen a beautiful home holiday makeover. Did you catch it?

Thiessen is remembered for her starring role as Kelly Kapowski on Saved by the Bell and her turn as bad girl Valerie Malone on Beverly Hills 90210. Nowadays, the beauty is a working mom and wife, co-starring on the USA Network’s White Collar. For the special makeover show, Thiessen invited Berk to her lovely, rustic home to give it a festive face lift.

The holiday makeover proved to be an easy challenge for Berk, who understood Thiessen’s unique taste and the importance of keeping the décor family-friendly for Thiessen’s three-year-daughter Harper with actor Brady Smith. Together, they found a great blend of trendy and modern, while retaining that sweet holiday feel. In the end, Bobby, Thiessen, Harper and Brady were more than happy with the outcome.

Berk accentuated the natural charm of Thiessen’s home with lots of greenery adorably decorated with small details, quirky wreaths, animals and gnomes hanging over the family’s large fireplace, and a gorgeous tree decorated with pine cones, woodland creature ornaments and glittery bulbs. Viewers of the episode saw Thiessen’s mouth drop with awe after seeing the impressive makeover.

If you didn’t catch the episode, check your local listings for replays or check out the photo gallery on HGTV’s website featuring Thiessen’s awesome holiday home makeover.

California revises controversial upholstery flammability standards

California revises controversial upholstery flammability standards

Cindy W. Hodnett -- Furniture Today, November 22, 2013

BERKELY, Calif. — California has revised its controversial Technical Bulletin 117 and adopted a new flammability standard that should allow producers to make furniture and baby products that do not contain flame retardant chemicals beginning Jan. 1.
California Gov. Jerry Brown announced on Thursday that the modification to the state's flammability standards for upholstered furniture was the "culmination of the administration's year-long effort to modernize the standards and reduce Californian's exposure to harmful flame retardant chemicals." Read the online report here.
"Today, California is curbing toxic chemicals found in everything from high chairs to sofas," said Brown. "These new standards will keep the furniture in our homes fire-safe and limit unnecessary exposure to flame retardants."
Beginning Jan. 1, manufacturers may begin manufacturing to the new standards, according to the governor's office. They will have a year to complete the transition and must come into full mandatory compliance on Jan. 1, 2015.
The standards, crafted based on a comprehensive review, statewide workshops and public comment, can be read in full here.
The adoption of TB 117 in 1975 mandated the use of flame retardant chemicals in upholstered furniture and baby product foam in the U.S. and Canada. An investigative series in the Chicago Tribune examined the efficacy and safety of the flame retardants and prompted a review of the TB 117 standard, which used an open flame flammability test.
The new standard eliminates the open flame test for filling materials and focuses on smoldering sources of flammability including cigarettes, space heaters and extension cords. It also addresses upholstery cover fabrics and requires the use of barrier materials with smolder-prone materials and tests the interactions of all the materials that go into a piece of upholstered furniture.
According to Brown's office, a number of manufacturers have already stated that under the new standards, they will no longer have to use flame retardants, and will either meet the requirements through the use of more smolder-resistant cover fabrics or smolder-resistant barriers beneath the cover fabrics.
"The previous standards focused predominantly on filling materials, where fires don't actually start," said Tonya Blood, Chief of the Bureau of Electronic and Appliance Repair, Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation. "The new standards were developed to address where the fire begins, which is the cover fabric, and to focus on the interactions of the cover fabric and filling materials."
Furniture flame retardants are associated with cancer, endocrine disruption, reduced IQ, infertility, birth defects, neurological impairments and other health problems, according to the Green Science Policy Institute, which provided scientific expertise to state agencies involved with the standard change.
"After seven years of hard work for healthy furniture and baby products, we are overjoyed with the new standard, TB117-2013," said Dr. Arlene Blum, visiting scholar in chemistry, UC Berkeley and executive director of the Institute. "Flame retardants will no longer be needed in furniture and we will all be healthier as a result."
"The evaluation of the fire safety benefits of the old California furniture flammability standard TB117 is simple - there are no benefits," said Dr. Vytenis Babrauskas, a fire scientist of Fire Science and Technology Inc. in a statement released by the Policy Institute. Babrauskas' research showed that adding flame retardants to furniture to meet the TB117 standard did not prevent ignition nor reduce the severity of a fire.
"With this excellent new regulation, we can expect that furniture fire deaths in California will continue to decrease and the health of the people of California will be protected." Babruaskas said. "The state of California is to be congratulated for refocusing its furniture regulation to where the fire safety problems are significant, that is smoking and smoldering fires."

‘Panto’N'Roll’: Rock’s Most Colorful Songs Illustrated With Pantone Swatches

“You know you enthrall me and yet you don’t call me / It’s making me blue, Pantone 292,” sing The Magnetic Fields on “Reno Dakota.” Of course, the relationship between music and Pantone’s increasingly fetishized pigments isn’t usually that literal. But Paris-based creative studio Chic & Artistic has united the two worlds once again, in a series called Panto’N'Roll, which uses Pantone swatches to represent classic songs like “Purple Rain” and “Yellow Submarine.” Click through to see the designs, which we discovered via It’s Nice That, and visit Chic & Artistic‘s website to learn more about their work.

Celebrity Designer, Bobby Berk returns to his roots during “The South’s Next Wave: Design Challenge”

Bobby’s come a long way from his humble beginnings in the South. He arrived to NYC less than 10 years ago with barely a dollar to his name, but a whole lot of drive, talent and ambition to make up for it. Bobby has quickly become the new “It Guy” in modern furniture and design. These days, celebrities such as Susan Sarandon, Brooke Shields, Sam Worthington Drew Barrymore, and Tori Amos have graced the doors of his Bobby Berk Home stores located throughout the US. Even Will and Jada Smith sleep between Bobby Berk Home sheets. In 2009, his stores made the list of gay icon Rupaul’s Top Favorite Things, but Bobby says “I’m still waiting on that call from Oprah.” Bobby has made multiple guest appearances on HGTV, Bravo, TLC, and NBC lending his design talents on residential home projects to designing the sets of hit shows. His growing empire keeps him traveling around the world looking for future BBH locations, dropping in on his factories to check on new product designs, and working on his many design projects from Hong Kong to Miami. When invited by David Goodrowe and Tim Hobby to be a part of [The South’s Next Wave: Design Challenge at The Museum of Modern Art & Design in Atlanta, GA, he was delighted to return home to the deep south.
The South’s Next Wave: Design Challenge, is part exhibition, part competition. The exhibition paired designers of interior spaces with Atlanta-based object designers, who together created imaginative vignettes throughout the museum. Bobby paired with Joe Manus who brought his amazing Mood Rocking Bed as a starting point of inspiration for Bobby. “The moment I saw Joe’s bed, it took me back to my childhood growing up in the south.”, Bobby said. “My favorite thing to do in the summer was to sleep out in the forest on the farm I grew up on. I used to beg my mom to let me put a real bed out in forest so I could lie there and listen to the sounds of the forest while still having all the comforts of home. My design for this competition will take you to that forest in the deep south, complete with the low hanging trees, stars in the sky, and crackling campfire slowing burning out as you fall asleep.”

On the opening night, Bobby’s unique design quickly became a fan favorite of Museum board members, local celebrities, and the 100’s of guest that came to see the exhibit. The South’s Next Wave: Design Challenge runs from November 11th - March 31th, 2012 at The Museum of Modern Art & Design in Atlanta.

For more information about the exhibit please visit http://www.museumofdesign.org/2012/03/call-for-submissions/. You can also find more information about Bobby and his stores at http://www.bobbyberkhome.com.
