A Chicago native, Bernard graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Industrial Design. In 1995 he moved to New York City and began designing modern furniture, products and technology for firms like Dakota Jackson, Martha Stewart, Swid Powell, Siemens, Milder Office and Ion Design.

After establishing a strong portfolio and network of contacts, Bernard relocated to Los Angeles for a fresh West Coast start. While working as a project director for a custom office furniture manufacturer, Bernard oversaw the design and construction of facilities for clients such as Ogilvy & Mather, Toyota, MTV and Kenneth Cole.

In the dot com era Bernard saw a resurgence in design sensibilities which allowed his team to experiment and take advantage of creative liberties. The Mastermind behind Jefdesigns is Changing Design, One Man at a Time

Jefdesigns is a design studio out of Portland, Oregon. This is unlike many other studios, however, in that it is a one man operation. Actually, it is one man and his dog. Joe Futschik is the designer and owner of this fresh company, and his goal is to turn out simple designs that are altogether bold and modern. He turns out everything from lightbox paintings and hand made wooden lamps to purses and handbags. Another way that Joes company is unique is that he is, for the most part, self taught in design.

Futschik relies on his gut instincts for his work, and whatever it is that inspires him at a given time is what he pursues, no matter what the medium is. The result of these tactics is a collection of objects of any and all uses that are still related to each other by identical attention to colors, light, and form design. His designs and products are available at many retail locations throughout the United States, and there are many more online retailers that carry his designs as well.

Some of the most eager types of establishments that have sought out their designs have been many bars, hotels, corporations, restaurants, and also many private homes as well. The company famously works with many in the interior design and architecture trades, and the companys products have been commissioned for many projects all over the world.

Some of the newest additions to the ultra modern, super simple design firm are recent partnerships for licensed printed images on canvas and on paper, and there are also many new pillows, plates and dishes, and custom handbags that are in the works as well. The company is always interested in teaming up with other professionals in the business that share the same visions and developing partnerships with manufacturers to expand the lines of textiles, rugs, and stationery.

Even though they enjoy success in design now, it did not always happen as such for Joe Futschik. He earned his degree in fine art, and unfortunately for a while the only things that it led him to were jobs waiting tables! He moved to Portland, Oregon, and finally began to build his dream as a professional designer. From his table lamps to his lightbox paintings, the creator has shown a strong track record of captivating with calm order in a world where busy otherwise reigns supreme.

Grilling in Style- Less is More

There is one word this season that describes the design trends in everything from modern baby bedding to cooking: Simple. The looks for 2009 do not have too many colors, they do not have too many shapes, and everything is large. As popular as grilling is in the USA, it has been quite a while since brilliant new designs have come along having to do with grills, aprons, or spatulas. That has all changed this year, thanks to talented design firm Eva Solo.
The very popular Eva Solo table grill fits right in with this year’s simple design trends, and was first launched in 2006. The convenient, easy-to-carry grill is available in white or black, and has a simple, bucket shape to it. It is made of fire-proof porcelain, and has won many awards around the world for not only being functional, but being aesthetically appealing, too. This modern design table grill also comes with a nifty little trivet to rest upon to keep it off of surfaces.
Eva Solo also has quite an impressive line of tools, utensils, and accessories to go along with the table grill. Elegantly understated grilling flatware, the company’s grill plate (in several attractive variations), and the Eva Solo grill dish are available to complete the classy outdoor cooking look. If there never was a fashion trend that had anything to do with grilling before, there sure is now.

Refreshingly Simple Contemporary and Modern Bedding

Finally Spring is upon us, and many avid decorators have been waiting eagerly for the time to change up the look of the bedrooms in their houses. Many people do switch the décor in their bedrooms as the seasons change, with rich jeweled hues in the fall, light pastel colors in the spring, bold solids in the summer, and anything warm during the winter. There are a lot of great designers that have simply awesome modern bedding collections for this spring, such as Dwell Bedding, Matteo, and DwellStudio Bedding. These design firms offer solid colors, simple geometric patterns, and sophisticated designs.

Texture seems to be more emphasized this season than in previous ones. Whether it is a soft, fuzzy feel or a more rigid, solid touch, there seems to be a trend in using texture in place of colored detail for the spring. Large, simple designs and silhouettes are popping up within the creations of top designers, and nature seems to be playing a big role for the season as well. Flowers have been and probably always will be one of the most popular design schemes for bedding, whether it is roses for the master suite or daisies for baby décor. Flowers are once again big for 2009, but in a completely different way. Instead of hundreds of tiny rosebuds scattered all over a comforter, one or two very large, solid-colored lilies are featured instead along with a few large strands of grass of the same color, for example.

Going right along with the “nature” idea are fabrics and textiles that are completely organic being used by top designers. Natural, minimally-processed fibers along with eco-friendly dyes can be found on designers’ websites from Milan to New York to Oregon….yes, Oregon. The whole idea this year is to get back to simplicity and natural design- surf the Web to see these brilliant motifs for yourself.

The Dramatic Appeal of Mid-Century Modern Home Design

This year mid-century modern design is sweeping through homes from Virginia to California, and the inspiration seems to stem from the unique twist of combining modern furnishings with those from the mid century to create a décor motif in homes that is both invigorating and impressive.
There are many different design themes that can be found in homes, and there are some defining characteristics of mid-century modern home design that capture the feel of a long-ago modernism.

First of all, teak wood is used as part of this design because it invokes a feeling of natural warmth and a strength that wood can provide. The teak is said to provide a pleasant backdrop to the colors and textures that are used in a home that is decorated with this motif, and the mid-century modern design relies on the teak wood to give the home a basis of calm serenity in a world that seems a bit crazier every day. Fiberglass is also popular in homes that are lavishly draped in this type of theme as well.

A streamlined look is the epitome of the mid-century modern look. This is often thought to be the most noticeable feature of the design. Furniture that was made before the 1950s often was curvy but still sleek and not overly cluttered up with too much detail. Smooth lines in the middle of the century became prevalent in a country that wanted to make things as simple as possible, and the furniture that is associated with this era is very distinct because of the simple stream-lined look of the pieces. The whole idea was simplicity.

Other trends in this type of home décor include the wide popularity of materials that had not really been used much previously with furniture. These included Plexiglass, Lucite, and even plastic. These man-made materials quickly found a home with the pieces that are the basis of this style and were used on table tops as well as used for entire furniture pieces such as chairs and ottomans.


And finally another telltale characteristic of the mid-century modern look is the use of many different textures and colors. The blending of the contemporary style with a variety of colors and textures compliment the simple décor very well, lending balance between the bold and the bright with the earth-toned teak and the simplistic creativity that mid-century modernism represents as the fullest and richest of interior trends.

Home Décor Trends for 2009

When you have a home that seems to be dying for your personal touch and décor talents, there are a lot of things to be considered from wall paint to rugs to the little accessories that make a big difference in the look and feel of your home. There are five general categories of themed ideas that most people go with when it comes to decorating or re-decorating their home, and although sometimes they can be mixed and matched throughout a home, most people prefer their home to follow one of these main décor trends. The styles are contemporary or modern, country, traditional or classic, ethnic, or tropical. Depending on your personal preferences, the style of the house itself, and the location that you are in, you might consider any one of these five to give you the home that you have always dreamed of.

The traditional look is one that is timeless and never goes out of style. The trend here is rounded edges and colors that are warm and inviting but not to bold or bright. The classic colors are used to evoke a warm neutral overtone, and the classic prints are most often used such as geometric designs and floral patterns. The more adventurous people usually are “tired” of the traditional look, but those who are not comfortable with radical design or a step away from the ordinary will find that the traditional look is safe and easy to incorporate.

Country décor is a trend that reminds us of simple, peaceful times in comforting environments and the appeal of a rustic dwelling far removed from the urban sprawl is very appealing to a lot of people. Fabrics and prints that are used seem more primitive and vintage than the traditional style ones, and one of the biggest and most popular patterns in country homes is the checked or gingham look. Knick knacks, accessories, and wall art that feature farm animals are popular, and the colors used are typically shades of brown, yellow, red, and orange.

For those who are more bold and adventurous, a contemporary or modern home will usually have nary a flower in sight, and will not have many things that are rounded in it; geometric shapes and patterns are more the style, and anything that is rounded is simple: Solid colors and smooth lines are the defining features of the contemporary look. Metal is a common material for anything from furniture to wall accents, and the underlying basis of this theme is artistic expression and simplicity.

There are a lot of people who evoke a tropical feeling for their home by using anything and everything that follows in shades of off-whites, light blues, and airy tans to resemble the ocean, clear skies, and the sands of beaches. This look is one that many people have a professional designer carry out, because choosing the wrong things can lead to not a tactful, relaxing home but a tacky, outdated one. One thing that is distinct about the tropical look is the large use of flowers and plants throughout the home.

A final home decorating trend for 2009 is the ethnic styles. The dark earth tones like deep red, yellow, green, and brown along with the extensive use of wooden accessories and clay sculptures set a home in this style apart from any other, and if done correctly can bring out a sense of being impressed and stimulated at the same time. Julian Lesser wants to be interesting and compelling. Revealing but not too revealing. He wants for his work to be worth something. But not just in a ledger. This Astoria-based artist has a gift. He’s modest but not shy when it comes to his art. His acclaimed collection, “Future Gardens and Other Destinations” recently opened in Upstate New York. Some of the same work will be descending on SoHo in

December. He’s no stranger to experimentation. He likes a good challenge. He thinks of New York as home. But to Lesser, life is fragmented. To Lesser, we are all ripped apart inside by ideas and emotions. And when the Molecule recently asked the young painter to bring us in a little bit closer to his art, we found a bit more in the process.

UM: What was a typical “day in the life” at the Lesser homestead growing up?

JL: Good question. It changed from day to day. Things would be normal for some time and then they’d completely get out of hand. When it was normal it was nice. Our family was very safe, very loving. We enjoyed cooking together, traveling and learning together. My mom is an artist as well. When I was a boy I would spend time drawing and painting in her studio. She always encouraged my creativity. Like I said, the good times were good. And then there were the bad times. Difficult. Stressful. There were times when we were in financial crisis and had to move from where we lived. Times my parents weren’t happily married and my brother and I were forced to weather the storms from the sidelines.

UM: How has living in New York affected your art?

JL: Living in NYC has made me realize that I was meant to make art. I grew up in Westchester and went to school in the Hudson Valley, which has a very vibrant artistic community. I was able to focus on my art in the mountains of New Paltz. Then I moved to NYC after graduating from college. I engaged my art in the city while finding a way to survive. I often wished I could quit everything and just paint, but quickly realized the city wasn’t supportive of my kind.

In a sense I’ve always lived in NYC. We would often come to see family or do other things, so I felt like a New Yorker early on. The city inspires me. Not only my art, but my drive. Every day is inspiring and challenging. Every day is a day to create something new, to strive to be bigger, better, stronger. New York City makes you want to succeed. You can’t be passive in any way. It’s fast and rough, and makes you explore your motives and inspirations and goals, your soul.

UM: More and more creative types are relocating to Astoria. How is it living in Queens as an artist?

JL: There is so much energy, very much like the energy you find in the city. And it’s very close – a quick train ride – so I don’t feel like I’m missing parts of the art community. But being here gives me peace and quiet too. There’s also a sense of community you might not find in Manhattan. It allows me the space I need without worrying about whether or not I can afford to eat. It’s ideal here. I get the space I need to create my work and I’m slightly removed from the social distractions of the city, so I’m not always tempted by sex or partying. Well, I still do get distracted sometimes. I’m not a prude. Besides, some of those city activities are part of my inspiration.

UM: What comes to mind when I say the word “bodies”?

JL: Bodies of water. Bodies of land. Collections. Mass groupings of a particular thing. The human body, which in itself is a massive collection of cells and neurons. Bodies are collections, groupings, families. Bodies…it’s really a huge word that can relate to so many things. It relates to my work, I think. It’s an overview of a larger picture, an umbrella with thousands of layers below it. My work is a final image with thousands of layers, ideas and emotions below it, peeking through and lying underneath. A body of work, bodies of work…it’s a very artful term.

UM: Your work has taken several turns with respect to media. Ink, acrylic, mixed. Is there a clear progression? Introduce us to your personal artistic evolution.

JL: [sighs] I’m an experimenter. I love to try new things. I feel like I’m at a place where it’s working, like I don’t have to experiment with materials as much, but now I can focus more on content. My multimedia work comes from the need to create a history and substance. The textures. The layers. I have a process where I create layers and history first, then work with my content. Painting without exploring is of no interest to me. My paintings are journeys, small adventures. Still life is of no interest to me. I’m more interested in creating a history or finding a problem, then figuring out how to visually resolve them in a painting.

UM: You recently had a successful opening in upstate New York.

JL: The opening was great! The show had 51 pieces in it, my largest show ever. I created the body of work over the course of 3 to 4 months. Friends, family, art buyers and others came. I sold 12 pieces opening night. I hope the show continues to sell. It’s showing through November 2nd. I dedicated the show to my nephew, Nathaniel Lesser, who died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) at 4 months back in early July. Whenever I got tired I remembered what, who I was working for. He was my motivation.

UM: You have a show coming up in SOHO.

JL: The show is at Bobby Berk Gallery. Bobby and I have been acquaintances for many years. We know a lot of the same people and share many friends. He has always had an interest in my art but didn’t have a space until early this year. It wasn’t until recently that he decided that my work would suit his space. He invited me to show a past collection of my work – it’s actually there now. He loved my new work and thought it would look great in the space. Of course I agreed.

We’ve grown our friendship and developed a business partnership, promoting his space and showing my work. The opening is December 11. The show is called “Escaping Manhattan: Future Gardens and Other Destinations Continued.” It will be some of the work from my most recent exhibition, “Future Gardens and Other Destinations,” as well as additional work I will complete over the next few months. I’m very excited about it.

UM: You were recently almost set on fire.

JL: Yes I was. Two cars in front of my apartment were parked next to a heaping pile of garbage on the curb. The blaze was bright and crackling and woke me up. I’m lucky one of those cars didn’t explode. I sleep naked so I would have really been fucked if fire had come through the window, or if I had to leave my apartment in a hurry. Since then I’ve been sleeping in shorts.

UM: In “Future Gardens” you fuse city structures with organic images.

JL: The collection is about traveling to cities, gardens and other landscapes. It’s about escaping New York and finding more. Of course I can’t leave right now…there’s too much going on. So, I decided to take a trip in my mind, to create my own adventures. While doing that I’ve found time to relax and reflect in my studio, or on the subway, or in Central Park. I made these paintings all over the city.

UM: Many of your human figures appear fractured. How did this style originate?

JL: As most of my work originates, without initial intention. This started with sketches and spills that were uncontrollable. But it felt right. Soon I realized it was a way to show self-reflection. To show all the sides of the people I was portraying. We are all fragmented, scattered, ripped apart inside by what we want versus what we need; what is right and what is wrong; how we feel versus what we think. The fragmented figures represent the daily internal and external struggles each and every one of us goes through as humans.

UM: What’s next?

JL: What’s next? Ha! Make more art. Keep exploring this crazy, overwhelming inspiring world we live in. There is no next except this! This is what I must do: self-explore. Try to figure out the way we all fit together. Do I make a difference? Do any of us make a difference? What’s the point of being here if you aren’t going to contribute in the best, most eager way you know how? We all must do our part to contribute whatever it is we have to offer the world, to make a difference. To inspire each other. To make this existence worth a damn.

Designer´s Eye, founded in 1997, is a textile design company with all design and production
in Sweden. You can find our woolen products in upmarket interior decorating shops and designshops all over the world. With a functional approach, we bring color coordinated building system of textiles to the home and office. Our design are contemporary Scandinavian with clean lines and unique patterns. Products range from blankets and pillows to room dividers and table wear in various combinations of color. With an emphasis on quality and design, the collection
is a three-time recipient of the Excellent Swedish Design Award.

Nicole Chiala and Kristina de Corpo opened the L.A. based Amenity in 2004 to bring their modern, high quality, nature-inspired designs to the broader market. They just released a series of nursery products for you and your little ones to enjoy, all of them made from organic and sustainably sourced fibers.

Their range includes organic cotton based blankets to keep him warm; hemp-based stretched prints for hanging on the wall; recycled plastic bottle fiber filled pillows for them to play with; crib sheets and skirts, bumper covers all made from natural fibers and water-based dyes. Who says contemporary design can't be kid friendly? Sure, it's sleek and spare (read: wonderful), but it also can be whimsical and inviting. Take the classic Eames rocker or the rainbow-hued Nelson ball clock, which seem like they could have been created with children in mind.

Spot on Square's new collection of kids' furniture further proves this theory. The elegant, clean-lined pieces feature playful flared feet and a refreshingly thoughtful construction. The dresser doubles as a changing station; the toddler bed has high sides near the headboard to prevent falls and an open lower half to facilitate tucking in, and so on. The items are also a sound environmental bet: All come in a choice of recycled or reclaimed MDF coated with non-toxic white paint or MDF mixed with natural-colored birch or bamboo.

Eight icons of design have joined forces with Orange22 Design Lab to launch the firm’s Blank Canvas Project. All of the super high-profile designers, including Yves Behar, Kamin Rashid, MIlton Glaser and Massimo Vignelli, have created new editions of Orange22’s indoor-outdoor, eco-friendly Botanist furniture. Botanist matches each designers royalty to a foundation or charity of their choice.

“When we began thinking about the Botanist Blank Canvas project two years ago, we knew we wanted to produce more than furniture. Botanist is about entrusting our colleagues – each of whom we admire, to do what they love and give back in the process. Botanist is simply a unique business model that serves as a catalyst to empower design for positive change,” says Dario Antonioni, founder of Orange22.

Botanist is a winning formula, because while the project has produced breathtaking furniture, it will also effect positive social change. Orange22’s original Botanist line features intricate surface patterns cut with water-jet technology. Each sleek, metal form begins its life as a Blank Canvas.
